PE strikers turn violent

STRIKING workers in Port Elizabeth turned violent yesterday, attacking a man with knobkerries and landing him in hospital in a serious condition.

This is the latest incident of violence, and the first in Port Elizabeth, connected to the engineering and metal industry strike that started earlier this week.

Charles Meintjies was on his way to work at car part manufacturer Autocast, in Struandale, when striking workers attacked him. Meintjies was rushed to hospital after he was allegedly repeatedly hit with knobkerries, and attackers jumped on his head when he fell.

Meintjies is a member of the workers of union Solidarity, which has encouraged its members to remain at work while negotiations between unions and industry continue. - Riaan Marais
