RESIDENTS of a Port Elizabeth neighbourhood have been pleading with the municipality to clear an illegal dumping site opposite an award-winning community centre – but all to no avail.

The rubble is located opposite the multimillion-rand Ubuntu Centre in Zwide's ward 26. The centre was built for the upliftment of vulnerable, disadvantaged and abused children living in Zwide.

It houses orphaned children and also acts as a clinic for HIV and TB sufferers.

Its facilities monitoring and evaluating manager, Fezeka Mzalala, said the rubble posed a health hazard.

"We work with individuals with compromised immune systems and the situation outside the building is a danger to our clients," Mzalala said. - Nomazima Nkosi
