A GROUP of religious leaders in Nelson Mandela Bay have vowed to help exorcise the "demon of corruption" in the city by being the voices of those who cannot call the government to account.

The Interdenominational African Ministers Association (Idamasa) yesterday said it wanted to monitor the ruling ANC to make sure it delivered on promises madeto people in the lead-up to elections.

At a press conference, Idamasa president Bishop Sandile Jika said members were concerned about the quality of life people were living and introspection by the government leaders was needed to determine exactly what could be done to help.

"We made a mistake in leaving the cries of our people in the hands of political organisations .. . today we came to our senses and took a decision to go back to our calling and use our prophetic voices on behalf of the marginalised and confront the ills done [to the people] by the present government." - Thulani Gqirana
