Protest in Uitenhage

PUBLIC order police members in Uitenhage were deployed to Langa last night after a service delivery protest erupted there in the evening.

Police were monitoring the situation in 20th Avenue in Langa, near Kamesh, where about 50 protesters had blocked the road with burning tyres and other rubble, Uitenhage police spokesman Warrant Officer Basil Seekoei said.

He said there had been no criminal incidents as a result of the protest by 7.30pm last night.

"The number of protesters is relatively small and we don't expect any major problems at the moment. The police members deployed there will continue to monitor the situation."
