THE Port Elizabeth High Court yesterday decided not to admit a police warning statement which allegedly contains a confession made by a man accused of murdering a Rhodes University student on her way to graduation in 2012.

Judge Irma Schoeman said she was hesitant about using the statement as evidence against the accused because of the manner in which it was obtained.

The judge said the investigating team should have used an officer from another station to obtain the statement if they believed it would include a confession.

She also said one of the officers on the investigating team served as an interpreter. - Lee-Anne Butler
