COMMUTERS in the Eastern Cape will be able to use Facebook, tweet, upload pictures on Instagram and surf the internet for free next month when the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) launches its Wi-Fi project in the province.

Santaco chief executive Nkululeko Buthelezi said the project, which was piloted in Johannesburg last month, was expected to reach the Eastern Cape next month.

Regional chairman Mbewana Matomane said the installation of Wi-Fi access points in taxis and at taxi ranks would change how people viewed the industry as a whole.

He said Wi-Fi access points would initially be installed at a few taxi ranks. "They will be at the Njoli, Main Street [Govan Mbeki Avenue] and Algoa/Cleary Park taxi ranks to start with. This is our way of ploughing back into the community which has supported us for so long." - Thulani Gqirana
