HOMESICKNESS, peer pressure, the cheap price and the excessive number of taverns are just some of the reasons why Eastern Cape youth become dependent on alcohol.

This is according to Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) student Sive Konkwana, whose blog on the subject walked away with the Best Campus Media Award at the Brandhouse Responsible Drinking Media Awards.

The journalism student's blog post, titled Alcohol dependency corrupts good manners in society, focused not only on the problems facing alcohol-dependent youth, but also had suggestions on how the government could deal with the issues. - Thulani Gqirana
