TODAY reverends, deacons and elders at a Port Elizabeth church in Bloemendal are all pitching in to help high school pupils in the area improve their grades and strive for excellence in education.

The congregation at the United Reformed Church start their winter school project today at Bethvale Primary School in Soudien Road, Bethelsdorp, where pupils in the impoverished Bloemendal will be tutored by mentors in subjects like Afrikaans, English, mathematics, maths literacy, biology, physical science, business studies and life skills.

Convener of the project, the Rev Hanzline Davids, said: "It is time the church takes the bull by the horns and does something to help our kids instead of just praying they pass.

"We've pulled in teachers, tutors and lecturers from our church and beyond – even the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University [NMMU] – to assist with the project." The winter school will run until Friday when all the pupils will be taken on a tour to NMMU. - Alvené du Plessis
