NEARLY 3000 Catholics filled the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Missionvale campus indoor complex for the ordination of bishop-elect Vincent Mduduzi Zungu at the weekend.

The congregation – including three archbishops, 24 bishops and more than 100 other clergy members from 50 Catholic churches around the Bay – draped the hall in church flags on Saturday. The hall vibrated as they sang various hymns, including The Church's One Foundation.

Zungu, 47, was appointed bishop for the Diocese of Port Elizabeth by Pope Francis at the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord Jesus Christ in Rome in February.
