Denied therapy for suing state

A PORT Elizabeth man who is suing the police for R2.6-million following a brutal assault has been refused public health treatment because he is litigating against the government, according to papers before the Port Elizabeth High Court.

Channold Jacobs, 25, had been refused psychiatric treatment for the past five years, psychologist Ian Meyer said in his report.

Jacobs claimed his jaw was broken in two places and he suffered severe trauma to his head during an assault and nine- hour detention at the hands of the police in Humansdorp in July 2008.

The police have denied his claim, saying he was arrested with minimum force and they did not know where and how his jaw was broken.

Meyer said Jacobs was diagnosed with severe post traumatic stress disorder and an anxiety disorder after the incident and needed intensive psychotherapy. - Estelle Ellis
