Man, 59, caught with perlemoen

A SWARTKOPS man is expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court today after being caught with perlemoen worth about R90000.

The 59-year-old was arrested along the N2 near St Albans at about 7pm on Tuesday following a tip-off.

It is believed he had been travelling from Jeffreys Bay to Port Elizabeth.

He allegedly had about 973 units of perlemoen – some of which were under size – in the Renault Sandero he was driving.

Police sources said officers from the Kabega Park police station and Flying Squad unit were waiting along the N2 and pulled him off the road.

Police spokesman Captain Johan Rheeder said the Organised Crime unit and Hawks had taken over the investigation. The vehicle was confiscated.

The man is expected to appear in court today on charges of illegal possession and transporting of perlemoen.– Gareth Wilson
