Court hears police 'fill arrest quotas'

A COUSIN of the Gelvandale man who claims he was beaten so badly by the police his jaw was broken in two places believes the Humansdorp police routinely arrest people just to fill their quotas.

This was heard in the Port Elizabeth High Court yesterday when Ashlin Prinsloo testified.

The case deals with Channold Jacobs, 25, who is suing the minister of safety and security for R2.6-million.

Jacobs claimed his jaw was broken in two places and he suffered severe trauma to his head during an assault and nine-hour detention at the hands of the police in Humansdorp in July 2008.

Jacobs's counsel, Advocate Pieter Mouton, said he was concerned about Prinsloo's evidence and would raise this during final argument in the case. - Estelle Ellis
