PE residents strip RDP houses in Chatty

People due to occupy newly-built RDP houses in Chatty, Port Elizabeth, stripped 10 of them of window frames, doors and other materials, the Eastern Cape human settlements department said on Wednesday (25/06/2014).

The group was angered by delays in them being allowed to move in on Monday, spokesman Lwandile Sicwetsha said.

They dismantled the houses on Tuesday.

"The housing development agency... has since opened a case of damage to property. So far, no arrests have been made."

Eastern Cape housing MEC Helen Sauls-August on Wednesday condemned the incident.

"Those responsible are reversing the good work done by government for the poor people of this province and robbing people of their homes."

Sauls-August called on locals to help police arrest those responsible for the destruction.

Sicwetsha said people were expected to start moving into the undamaged houses by the end of the week. - Sapa
