PE matric among SA's brightest

WHEN the former head boy of Harvest Christian School was called to the principal's office last week, he did not expect to be told he was the country's top matric pupil in science and economics in the Cambridge International exams.

Iain Duthie, 19, of Walmer, beat 6000 national private school counterparts by scoring the highest marks in the subjects, ironically the ones he found the most difficult during the final exams in November.

When he got a message from Harvest principal Sean Moore last Tuesday asking him to come to the school, Duthie said he was not sure what to expect.

"I missed his call and he left a message to come see him. I was a bit nervous. He told me and I was just shocked. It was a good shock because underneath it I was really, really happy," he said.

The Cambridge International Exam is written in 85 predominantly private schools across the country. - Zandile Mbabela
