Two robbery suspects held after high-speed cop chase

TWO suspected robbers were arrested following a high-speed car chase along Marine Drive, Summerstrand, in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday after the vehicle they were travelling in rolled.

A third suspect, who was armed, is on the run.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Alwin Labans said the men had allegedly robbed a man at gunpoint in the Hobie Beach carpark shortly before 11pm.

Nearby police witnessed the incident and chased after  a red Volkswagen Citi Golf which veered off the road and rolled into the bush near the Cape Recife Nature Reserve. The Golf had been reported stolen.

The three men escaped from the crashed car and ran off into the bush near the Pine Lodge Resort. The Humewood Trio task team and K9 unit were brought in and they arrested two of the suspects.

Several items taken in the robbery, including a cellphone, were allegedly found on them.

Labans said the two suspects, aged 25 and 28, would appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court today on a charge of armed robbery. - Gareth Wilson
