A PORT Elizabeth teenager became a hero, along with other residents yesterday, when he saved a baby from a burning building in Korsten.

At least 30 people were left homeless when a fire gutted the second storey of the Anvers building – previously Anvers Ahmed Pharmacy – in Durban Road.

Passers-by rushed into the burning building to help pull those trapped inside to safety.

Chevron Williams, 16, was among them.

"A woman came running up to me and asked me to climb through one of the small windows into her room to save the baby," he said.

"The windows were too small for them to climb through so they needed someone smaller. They pushed a ladder against the wall and I climbed into the room.

"There was smoke everywhere. I heard the baby crying and then found the cot. I managed to lift her out and passed her through the window before climbing out," Williams said. - Gareth Wilson
