Bay at risk of millions lost over houses

THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality could pursue legal action against consulting engineers who approved defective RDP houses as the city is at risk of losing millions of rands from Bhisho.

The Eastern Cape Human Settlements Department refuses to fork out money for shoddily built houses, which could force the metro to write off some of the money owing from Bhisho.

This was revealed at the budget and treasury portfolio committee meeting yesterday.

Discussing the increase in the housing revolving fund threshold to R145-million, councillors lambasted the officials who were responsible for the bungle. The fund is used to pay housing contractors for projects while the municipality awaits payment from the provincial government. - Rochelle de Kock
