Call to limit medical damages amounts
By TMG Editor - 19 June 2014
A PROMINENT medical malpractice insurer has called on the government to make a law limiting the amount of damages that can be claimed from doctors, as the aftermath of a sharp rise in lawsuits brought against medical practitioners would soon make private healthcare too expensive for the general public.
"It's a lose-lose situation for all concerned," Malcolm Padayachee, manager of Professional Risks at Aon South Africa, said.
He said his proposal mirrored exactly what had been done with the Road Accident Fund and would ensure doctors and consumers were protected financially in the event of a successful malpractice claim. - Estelle Ellis
