Self-build housing plan on cards

A LAYOUT plan to build singlestorey RDP houses for residents of Walmer township, with yards big enough to accommodate a vehicle and future building extensions, was given the thumbs-up by Nelson Mandela Bay councillors yesterday.

Although full council will still have to give the final go-ahead, the project means the community are one step closer finally to receiving their homes. Once approved by council, the municipality will be able to start installing bulk infrastructure and services on the recently acquired pocket of land near the Walmer Country Club in Victoria Drive.

The 3500 families will be relocated to the vacant land for temporary housing while servicing and building of RDP houses in the area that residents are currently occupying is completed.

Residents who cannot be accommodated on the land once the houses are built – there is only space for 2000 houses – will be placed on the recently purchased land. - Rochelle de Kock
