'Pillar of society' gets bail

THE suspected founding member of one of Port Elizabeth's oldest gangs was described as a pillar of society yesterday before being released on bail.

Dr Shaun Ah Shene, 49, of Adcockvale, was arrested earlier this month for allegedly threatening to kill two men while they ate breakfast at the Metlife Plaza Wimpy on May 21.

Ah Shene, alleged to be the leader of the Ah Shenes, more commonly known as the Chinas, allegedly told one of the complainants: "Jy sal vrek [you are going to die]. People are going to read about you in the newspapers. I will shoot you."

It is further alleged that he then bragged about his connections to the notorious 28 prison gang in Cape Town before driving away in his BMW. Two men wearing black beanies were allegedly seated inside the vehicle. - Kathryn Kimberley
