Homes too dilapidated to transfer

THREE old age homes in Nelson Mandela Bay's northern areas are in such an appalling state that the municipality plans to revoke an earlier decision to transfer ownership of the homes to the East Cape Council for the Aged, councillors heard yesterday.

Although the Council for the Aged is no longer the custodian of the Bethelsdorp, Elizabeth Stuurman and Allan Hendrickse homes, as it was taken over by Basa Homes in October, the city wants new welfare organisations to manage the homes.

This comes after years of complaints and protests by the elderly residents at the three homes about the lack of maintenance at the facilities and steep rental increases. - Rochelle de Kock and Yoliswa Sobuwa
