NELSON Mandela Bay youth joined the rest of the country in commemorating Youth Day yesterday with a host of events, from sports tournaments to co-hosting radio shows and having library days for orphans.

The municipality did not hold any official events to commemorate the 38th year since school pupils were killed in Soweto on June 16 1976 by apartheid authorities after protesting against being taught in Afrikaans.

Municipal spokesman Mthubanzi Mniki said the city would have events throughout the month. Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the national Youth Day commemorations at Galeshewe Stadium in Kimberley. - Mkhululi Ndamase
