MYSTERY surrounds the killing of a Port Elizabeth teacher at the hands of her husband who, minutes after killing her, turned the gun on himself.

Much-loved Emfanini Primary School teacher Desmond Maneli's family and former pupils have expressed shock that the fun-loving man would turn to violence.

Described by many of his past pupils as their favourite teacher at the KwaDwesi school, Maneli, 54, is believed to have shot his 53-year-old wife, Sylvia, shortly before 10am on Saturday at their Petersvale Street, Morningside, home.

It could not be established yesterday where she taught.

Relatives at the couple's house said they had no idea why Maneli would shoot his wife and then himself. - Gareth Wilson
