Theft from vehicles on rise in city

AN AVERAGE of 200 vehicles are broken into every month in Nelson Mandela Bay. About 600 cases were reported from March until May, police sources revealed yesterday.

The high figure equates to an average of 46 vehicles every week, with valuables most often stolen from the vehicles including laptops, tablets and cellphones.

One of main factors linked to the thefts is central-locking jamming devices used in busy shopping centre car parks.

Police spokesman Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said the thefts were a "growing" concern. She was unable to comment on the figures given to The Herald due to a moratorium on crime statistics, which are only released once a year. - Gareth Wilson
