NUMSA national treasurer Mphumzi Maqungo laid into Transnet chief executive Brian Molefe yesterday, calling him a factory fault of note who was working with the ANC in trying to undermine the union.

This came as police arrested a 35-year-old man whom Transnet claimed was a striking Numsa member believed to be linked to the spate of violent attacks on the properties of non-striking workers.

"The Numsa member, a striking employee at the Ngqura container terminal, is in police custody and is cooperating fully with the investigators. As a result, we are confident the police are close to rounding up all the perpetrators of recent violent acts against our colleagues," the company said.

But Numsa said it could not confirm that the man was a member of the union. It also said there was no evidence that Numsa members were behind the attacks, as continuously claimed by Transnet. - Mkhululi Ndamase
