A NUMBER of new toys were left behind after Fifa left Nelson Mandela Bay in 2010, leaving municipal director of safety and security Shane Brown with a smile on his face.

His department received a budget of R100-million for capital expenditure and R30-million for operations during the soccer showpiece. "Money we spent wisely," Brown said.

A large portion went to surveillance equipment for Port Elizabeth and the establishment of a Joint Operations Centre (JOC) at the South End Fire Station. The JOC was used to monitor areas around the stadium and key traffic points.

The equipment is still being used today, specifically in emergency situations such as flooding and fires. - Riaan Marais
