MEC in new schools vow

FRESH into a new five-year term as Eastern Cape Education MEC, Mandla Makupula aims to prioritise tailormade training programmes for educators.

In an interview yesterday, Makupula listed staff development and curriculum transformation as his priorities while advocating more community involvement.

He realised from his previous term that a "blank-cheque approach" to teacher development did not yield a return deserving of the millions of rands spent.

"We want to hear from teachers what their specific needs are and where they are lacking so that we provide training. "We can't keep giving blank cheques for courses," the MEC said. - Zandile Mbabela
