Man, 49, in court on threat charge

THE suspected founder of Port Elizabeth's oldest surviving gang appeared in court yesterday on a count of intimidation.

The state is opposing bail for Shaun Ah Shene, 49, of Adcockvale, the alleged leader of the Ah Shenes, more commonly known as the Chinas, a gang that operates in the city's northern areas.

According to statistics by the newly established Gang Task Team, the Chinas have 35 known members, making them the city's biggest gang.

They dominate in areas including Gelvandale and Schauderville, and also, police say, Glendinningvale. - Kathryn Kimberley
