Ex-Rhodian set for epic sea adventure

A FORMER Rhodes University rower and six mates are hoping to paddle their way into the record books by crossing the Indian Ocean from Australia to Durban in a rowing boat.

After years of adventures to raise money for charities, Cameron Bellamy left yesterday on his toughest challenge to date – rowing 8000km in 80 days.

The multinational crew, skippered by Scottish rower Leven Brown, hope to paddle in rotating two-hour shifts for the entire crossing in a custom- made 15m boat. It features solar panels and satellite technology.

Eeach team member has a ration pack of 6500 calories a day, but they are expected to burn off between 8000 and 10000 calories, meaning they will lose 1kg every three days. – David Macgregor
