'Sustainable use of seas can reduce poverty

THE government has identified "ocean economy" as a key driver to eliminate poverty and reduce inequality by 2030.

This emerged at a meeting of stakeholders on the implementation of the white paper on the National Environmental Management of the Ocean (Nemo) in Port Elizabeth yesterday attended by academics, various NGOs, councillors and members of the community.

Environmental Affairs Deputy Minister, Barbara Thompson, who was scheduled to engage with the stakeholders, failed to make an appearance due to another commitment, but the World Ocean Day celebration went ahead. - Hendrick Mphande
