School staff to return as exams begin

TEACHING is expected to resume at Limekhaya High School in Nelson Mandela Bay today, but pupils – about to embark on mid-year exams – fear this may be too late.

Staff and parents met with officials from Uitenhage's district education office yesterday where it was decided teachers who stopped teaching last week in support of one of their colleagues, Buyiswa Qundele, would return to the classroom today.

Qundele, a Grade 9 Xhosa teacher, had been accused of verbally abusing pupils and parents, and enforcing corporal punishment.

Angry pupils then marched to the district office to hand over a letter to officials – and eight teachers stopped teaching in support of Qundele. - Tremaine van Aardt
