Numsa to strike if bosses don't accept demand

THE National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) has given employers in the engineering and metal industry a week to accept its 15% wage increase demand, failing which it could go on a strike that would severely hit the Eastern Cape economy.

Negotiations between the union, the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa (Seifsa), the National Employers' Association of South Africa (Neasa) and Border Industry Association (Bia) reached deadlock last week after a series of meetings between the parties that started on March 26.

Numsa said it could go on strike on July 1 if an agreement was not reached when the union and employers returned to the negotiating table from Tuesday to Friday. - Mkhululi Ndamase
