PROTESTS erupted in Uitenhage earlyyesterday when residents of an informal settlement in Kamesh were issued with eviction notices.

More than 100 people living in shacks in Lapland, on the outskirts of Tiryville, took to the streets shortly after 7am when they were told by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality they had six months to vacate the land they were living on.

"Why the f**k should we leave? I've been living here for years. They ... should f**k off and leave us in peace," a 41-year-old resident, who did not want to be named, shouted.

"Those f*****s in government think they can just order us around.

"They don't care that winter is here and we don't have a place to stay. Why don't those people try to live like us for a change? Why don't they come to Lapland and see what it's like!" - Riaan Marais
