Former activists slate TRC unit

A GROUP of former liberation activists, who suffered at the hands of the apartheid security police, have lashed out at the government for failing to implement the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Committee (TRC) that they should be financially compensated.

The Khulumani support group – a national body that represents about 90000 former anti-apartheid activists – are frustrated because it claims the government only recognised the contributions made by the Umkhonto weSizwe veterans while others were left out in the cold.

Khulumani members, joined by Amabutho members, staged an all-day sit-in at the ANC regional offices in Nelson Mandela Bay on Monday.

Because the regional leaders were out of town at the time, they had a meeting with them on Tuesday where they aired their grievances. - Rochelle de Kock
