DESPITE a pending rape charge, being fired for allegedly fleeing an arrest warrant and being the subject of a medical professionals probe, a former top Port Elizabeth doctor has been reappointed in a senior government health post.

Dr Nasir Syed, 49, has managed to secure employment at a salary of R100000 a month with the Eastern Cape Health Department – his former employer – as chief executive of a Port Alfred hospital, in the face of a string of run-ins with his superiors and other alleged complaints.

Syed was in charge of Nelson Mandela Bay's clinics until 2010 when he fled South Africa after the police obtained a warrant of arrest on a charge of rape. - Estelle Ellis
