Sexual assault accused remanded

A UITENHAGE man accused of raping his four-year-old niece was yesterday remanded after failing to appear for the start of his trial on Monday amid claims by a police officer that he was drunk.

The 52-year-old, who insists he did not appear in court because he overslept and could not afford the taxi fare, was on bail previously.

He cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, who is now aged seven.

The state alleges he raped his niece at the home of his sister in KwaNobuhle in the early hours of December 6 2011. The man had decided to sleep over at his sister's home. - Lee-Anne Butler
