Inmate handcuffed 'like Jesus to cross'

A CONVICTED murderer and senior member of the 26 gang broke down in court yesterday as he recalled how warders handcuffed a fellow inmate to the prison bars "like Jesus to the cross".

Fuzile Sazi is one of 231 prisoners suing Correctional Services Minister Michael Masutha for pain and suffering as a result of an alleged mass torture at St Albans Prison in July 2005.

Meanwhile, Correctional Services officials present in the Port Elizabeth High Court, where the matter has been argued for the past two weeks, continued to snigger and pass remarks as Sazi gave evidence yesterday.

Sazi, a "number one" in the notorious 26 prison gang, spent five of his 17-year sentence for murder in St Albans's maximum security section. - Kathryn Kimberley
