Flying squad back in action

THE Port Elizabeth Flying Squad has finally repaired two of its response cars, a day after its last operational vehicle was sent in for repairs on Monday which left the specialist unit without wheels.

This comes after several months of pleading to police bosses to increase the unit's vehicle fleet, which usually has 15 dedicated vehicles – appeals which fell on deaf ears.

The last operational vehicle, a Chev Cruze, was booked into the police garage on Monday morning due to continuous overheating problems and a suspected broken catalytic converter.

In an attempt to ensure at least a handful of Flying Squad officers were on the road, members went to surrounding police stations begging to be lent response cars.

However, only hours after queries were sent to provincial and national police management asking how this was possible, two vehicles were released from the garage and put back on the road. - Gareth Wilson and Riaan Marais
