Parolee tells court of prison torture ordeal

A PAROLEE testifying in the Port Elizabeth High Court yesterday jumped with fright when he was shown a shock shield allegedly used to torture inmates at St Albans Prison in 2005.

Sizwe Mequeni, who was described as a model prisoner at the time of the alleged mass torture, is one of 231 claimants in a multimillion-rand lawsuit against Correctional Services Minister Michael Masutha.

The inmates claim they were tortured for several days following the murder of warder Babini Nqakula. Among the weapons allegedly used to torture the thousands of inmates in the prison's maximum security section were shock shields.

The prisoners claim they were drenched in water before the warders hit them with the shock shields, amplifying the effect. - Kathryn Kimberley
