New study looks at how whales interact with ships

A NEW study to ultimately prevent sea disasters involving whales and ships got under way in Nelson Mandela Bay this week.

The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) kicked off cutting edge research focusing on the mammals and their responses to sounds in the ocean.

The research is part of a memorandum of understanding signed between NMMU and Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) on Tuesday and will focus on two baleen whale species in Algoa Bay, as well as what impact shipping and construction noise may have on these mammals.

TNPA will fund the R800000 research project over four years. - Thulani Gqirana
