Flooding risk to new housing

AS the Eastern Cape's winter cold approaches, beneficiaries of a housing project in Port Elizabeth's Missionvale are concerned for the safety of their new homes which are being built on a flood plain.

The project reportedly kicked off late last year, with contractors building houses about 200m from the salt pans and less than 100m from a sewerage dam.

Bennie Marais, 50, recalled how shack dwellers who built their homes on exactly the same spot as the new houses, fought for their lives when heavy rains washed all their shacks and belongings away.

"The municipality had to [move] all the affected families to different areas as this specific area was proclaimed a flood plain," Marais said. - Alvené du Plessis
