Shack demolished without consent

AN elderly Nelson Mandela Bay woman has been left homeless after her shack was demolished without her knowledge or consent, allegedly by municipal staff.

A frail Thenjiwe Lobose, 74, said she was among the many Silvertown residents who were asked to relocate to Wells Estate in March but had refused, saying she was too old to relocate as the settlement had been her home since 1986.

A visibly upset Lobose said she and other residents were under the impression the municipality would build them houses, but were instead left with the concrete foundations where their shacks once stood.

"There was a meeting which was called by Ward 16 councillor Xola Sabana. He said that some people would have to move to Wells Estate. I told them it was not possible for me as I am old and Silvertown had been my home since 1986. - Yoliswa Sobuwa
