Housing plan slated

THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s plan to build only 835 houses over the next financial year was blasted by councillors yesterday, who said it was not nearly enough to eliminate the metro’s 80000 housing unit backlog.

Councillors have demanded that senior managers head back to the drawing board to readjust their service delivery targets for the 2014-15 financial year after it was revealed that only 112 defective RDP houses would be rectified.

The  metro is battling a backlog of about 39000 defective state-subsidised houses.

At a joint mayoral and budget and treasury committee meeting yesterday, the ANC, DA and COPE expressed their dissatisfaction at some of the targets contained in the draft service delivery and budget implementation plan (SDBIP). - Rochelle de Kock
