Shooting mayhem at Chippa's Tavern

THREE people were killed and four critically wounded when a gunman opened fire on patrons at Chippa's Tavern in Nibe Street, New Brighton, shortly after 10 last night.

According to police sources, some of the injured were shot in the back as they tried to flee when the drama unfolded.

Police said the attack was possibly linked to three other incidents last week, including the recovery of an arms cache in another tavern in New Brighton, a shootout with police during a car chase and the murder of Andiswa Kantyo, 35, who was found shot in the head in an open field in Perseverance outside Port Elizabeth.

Details were still sketchy last night, with police still at the scene at midnight. Shocked patrons and residents huddled together outside the tavern.

They refused to comment, or provide information to the police, for fear of reprisals.
