Father, son in Gibraltar swim

A PORT Elizabeth pharmacist has set a new record in his age category for swimming across the Straits of Gibraltar – the 16km stretch of water between Europe and Africa, connecting the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.

Ken Noble, 65, and his son Chad, 36, from Cape Town, completed the swim from the tip of Spain to the coast of Morocco earlier this month despite the strong currents.

The Summerstrand resident set a new record in the over-60 category with his time of three hours 44 minutes.

"It was an amazing experience. It wasn't a race. It was simply something Chad and I had dreamt of doing. We were given a week-long window by the Spanish Swimming Association to do the straits," Noble said yesterday. - Tremaine van Aardt
