By TMG Editor - 23 May 2014
A FORMER Aliwal North police station commissioner who was arrested by a colleague and several heavily armed police officers over a alleged racist incident has won his multimillion-rand case for unlawful arrest and detention against Safety and Security Minister Nathi Mthethwa.
The Eastern Cape High Court in Grahamstown will decide at a later stage exactly how much damages Chris Weitz is entitled to, but he sued Mthethwa for R3.9-million.
The court found that Weitz, who was represented by Port Elizabeth advocates Pieter Mouton and Ivana Bands, instructed by attorney François Swanepoel, was unlawfully arrested and detained for 15 hours. - Estelle Ellis
