Absent councillor angers colleagues

NELSON Mandela Bay councillors want speaker Maria Hermans to enforce a council rule against PAC councillor Anele Yawa which states if a councillor misses three consecutive meetings without an apology, he should be relieved of his duties.

At a safety and security portfolio committee meeting yesterday, ANC and DA councillors complained that Yawa – who serves on the committee – had been absent from several meetings without filing an official leave of absence.

Yawa has also missed several council meetings in recent months.

The safety and security committee chairman asked the secretariat to check how many meetings Yawa had missed and report it to Hermans.

Yawa could not be reached for comment. – Rochelle de Kock
