THE Port Elizabeth High Court yesterday heard how the police repeatedly tried to obtain a statement from the boyfriend of a Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) student who was found strangled in her room in 2011.
According to the former policeman who headed the case, Warrant Officer Laurens Wicks, the police tried to obtain a statement from the student’s alleged lover and former teacher, Mutshutshu Muvhango, 31, from June that year until his eventual arrest in September 2011.
Muvhango is accused of murdering Tshepiso Sithole, 18, in a jealous rage and stealing her cellphone. Muvhango, a married father of two, was visiting Tshepiso in Port Elizabeth at the time of her death. Tshepiso, who was a first-year civil engineering student, was found dead in the room of her Summerstrand student residence on Sunday June 26. – Lee-Anne Butler
