Teacher sit-in over payment confusion

ANGRY and frustrated Nelson Mandela Bay Grade R teachers yesterday stormed the city’s Education Department offices, demanding clarity on why they were being placed under the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).
More than 100 teachers staged a sit-in on the first floor of the Ethel Valentine building in Sidwell, after getting a circular telling them they were under the programme.

But according to the provincial department this was nothing new as Grade R teachers – who are employed on a contract basis and get a monthly stipend – have always been under the public works programme.
