YOUNG and old joined forces in a mass march against violence through the gang-ridden streets of Helenvale in Port Elizabeth.

The area, where 20 violent deaths have occurred in the past two months, has 17 gangs operating in it.

The notorious suburb had been fairly quiet over the past three weeks, but on Friday residents chose to continue making their yearning for a peaceful neighbourhood known.

Although the turnout for the march for peace was poor – as the idea was to get the entire suburb involved – the message was clear. – Alvené du Plessis
